Ever since the explosion of Temple Run, many developers have attempted to apply the formula to a host of other titles. Paddington Run is an excellent example of building from a shared foundation and expanding replayability through additional challenges while keeping a premise that makes perfect sense for the character.
The story begins with Paddington enjoying his day with the rest of the Brown family as he prepares his favorite marmalade jars. Alas, an untimely accident causes Paddington to lose his step and let go of his favorite marmalade jars. He must now run around the busy streets of London to collect them.
A quick tutorial covers the basics of the gameplay to beginner players. While running in one direction is fairly automatic, sidestepping to the left or right requiring swiping to the intended direction. If Paddington meets a curve in the road, you may swipe and hold it in the direction you want to turn.
The streets are lined with floating marmalade jars that you can collect. There are also several obstacles you may want to avoid, including cars running toward you and road repair signs. A swipe up will make Paddington jump while swiping down makes the shorthaired bear slide underneath the signs all the while picking more marmalade on its path.
While Paddington’s running is already adequate, there are certain lanes on the road that will accelerate his running for a couple of seconds. At times Paddington may also run into trampolines, allowing the bear to jump higher in order to reach more marmalades.
Aside from these, Paddington may also run into certain items that will grant him temporary power-ups. A rocket will allow him to avoid most of the ground obstacles like buses and cars and simply collect from above. Balloons act like the rockets without the speed. A twin jar doubles all the jars along the paths while a vacuum does the job of pulling all the jars toward you, making it easier to just run around the course. Finally, Paddington can ride a skateboard, which transports him to another area with pipes and ramps and a lot more marmalade jars.
Every level also has different objectives, from collecting a certain number of marmalade jars to running a minimum distance or a fixed period of time. Meeting these goals does not end the level and will actually encourage you to meet higher targets. If you do bump into an obstacle, you have a chance to be revived by watching a quick ad or spending gems. However, if you get bumped again, the only way to be revived may only be with the gems. You will have to spend real money to get more gems.
You also gain experience while running and avoiding all obstacles, and together with the jars you collect, certain options unlock such as new costumes and more abilities.
It also helps that Paddington is a beautifully animated and rendered game, from the authentic-looking streets of London to the zany power-ups, and Paddington himself.
